What do shoelaces, particle motions, and surface symmetries have in common? The answer is braid groups. In this talk, we give a geometric introduction to braid groups by viewing braids as continuous motions of points in the plane. This perspective naturally leads to configuration spaces and fundamental groups, providing a bridge between topology and algebra ;)
