In this talk, I will discuss the construction of translation flows as suspension flows over interval exchange transformations (IETs). I will explain why a mixing flow cannot be obtained when the underlying IET has only finitely many sub intervals, but how mixing can arise when infinitely many subintervals are allowed. If time permits, I will present an explicit example illustrating this phenomenon.
