The Hilbert matrix and its generalizations

I discuss a new approach to the study of the classical Hilbert matrix that uses the (generalized) Mehler-Fock transform to describe its spectral properties  and its generalization as an operator acting on Bergman spaces. I will also mention some open problems related to Hilbert matrix operators acting on Bergman spaces.
